Tip of the week:
DISASTER HAS STRUCK...NOW WHAT?

Preparing in ADVANCE if disaster strikes is the key.

Start NOW with preparing a complete, up-to-date-inventory list of what you own. Include taking both photographs and video tape of your possessions. Record all serial numbers available and mark the rest of your belongings with a special marking tool. You can get these tools from your local Police or hardware store.

Keep these lists, photos and videotapes somewhere safe from destruction.

Check with your insurance company and make sure you have protection coverage of all your assets. You may wish to consider a special insurance rider for full value of your jewelery, electronics and collections.

Don’t wait until disaster strikes....prepare now.

If you have to leave your home after disaster has struck.

Here are a few simple, yet effective precautions you can take if you still have electricity:

  • Leave the radio on, preferably tuned to a station airing "talk radio". There is nothing that conveys the impression of an occupied home quite as well.

  • Activate a multi-program type timer to give your home the "lived in" look. Load up your vehicle in the garage with the garage door closed ( no sense advertising you are leaving)

  • If you do not have electricity, review what you want on and what you want off, if the power is re-activated while you are gone.

  • Carefully lock all doors and windows.

  • Have a special hiding place for your valuables if you must leave them at home.

One final note:

You can never go wrong with preparing in advance. Time and time again, Police have found that the criminal element go to the house of "least resistance". If you target harden your premises, chances are the crooks will go somewhere else.

Sometimes the most simplest of crime prevention techniques - like outside display decals identifying you have marked your property - has been the sole deterrent of a break-in.

You can get detailed information on burglar-proofing your house from your local Police Department.
