Always insist that a wilderness traveler complete a detailed Trip Itinerary  ( trip plan ) and leave it with a friend.  be prepared for your chosen recreation and never hike alone.  Guidelines are available from Outdoor Outfitters, Search and Rescue agencies and Government Departments.

Here are 12 tips for "Outdoor Travel"
Outdoor essentials include:

  1. TIP #1
    Map of the area and compass.  Know how to use them

  2. TIP #2
    Large orange-colored plastic bag - useful as emergency shelter, signaling device or rainwear.

  3. TIP #3
    Flashlight and spare batteries.

  4. TIP #4
    Extra food and water.

  5. TIP #5
    Extra clothing - rain and wind clothes.  Toque and gloves, sweater and warm pants - Not Jeans.

  6. TIP #6
    Sun protection - sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, long-sleeved shirt and pants.

  7. TIP #7
    Pocket knife.

  8. TIP #8
    Waterproof matches and / or a full lighter.

  9. TIP #9
    Candles and / or fire starter ( efficient fire building in adverse weather must be learned before you venture out!)

  10. TIP #10
    Ensure weather forecast and hazards ( e.g.. Snow conditions) are checked prior to departure.

  11. TIP #11
    First aid kit ( training is required to develop skills needed for proper first aid ).

  12. TIP #12
    Extras - whistle, small lightweight ground insulation such as "insulite", projectile-type flares, tarp.
