At CautionZone, we recognize that drug abuse is a problem in sport. The incidence of anabolic steroid use is on the increase depending on the sport or group surveyed. Many users disregard the well publicized side effects of steroids for the desire to win in combination with improving physically in a very short time period. Even young people with no interest in sports are also attracted to using steroids to enhance their physical appearance or improve their employment qualifications.

  1. TIP #1
    Rapid weight gain and an increase in muscle size and strength are the most obvious signs.


  2. TIP #2
    Changes in behavior. Look for increased moodiness or sudden shifts in mood, depression, hostility, hypersensitivity, loss of interest in previous activities or hobbies, awareness with the drug culture and haunts, and dishonesty or deception. Pay particular attention to an intense preoccupation with weight training and body image.


  3. TIP #3
    Physical and Psychological Indicators include:
    - Lowering of the voice.
    - Growth of body hair with both males and females.
    - Elevated moods, a sense of well being, increased self-confidence & self-esteem.
    - Increased sexual interests.
    - Jaundice, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes 
       ( MAY be a sign of a liver disturbance)
    - Abnormal breast development in males.
    - Increased appetite. Watch for diets including certain foods, protein, etc.
    - Appearance of acne on the upper back, arms, shoulders and face may increase.
    - Development of a rounded or "moon" face 
      (a puffy facial appearance as water retention is common.)


  4. TIP #4
    Physical Evidence. You may discover unusual pills, vials, syringes and other drug paraphernalia

Who is at risk? The population most at risk are young people involved in activities where steroid use is already widespread. At CautionZone.com we believe if you want to know your child, look at his/her friends. Peer pressure in the teen years is more powerful than any of us adults realize. Pay particular attention to the friends. Go with your first instincts and follow up. Watch for new or different friends who are very abnormal appearance, behavior or goals.
